Euro Area Posts a €3.6 Billion Trade Surplus in Oct. as EU Plunges into Deficit

(Eurostat) The Euro area recorded a 3.6 billion euros in international trade in goods surplus, down from 29.8 billion euros surplus in the prior year.

The Euro area’s exports to the rest of the world improved by 7.3% to 214.0 billion euros in October from the prior year. Imports rose by a higher margin of 24.1% to 210.4 billion euros in the same period. 

Intra-euro area trade increased by 17.3% from the prior year to 196.7 billion euros in October. In the January to October period, intra-euro area trade was up by 19.6% to 1,780 billion euros. 

In the January to October period, the euro area had a trade surplus of 135.3 billion euros, down from a surplus of 180.9 billion euros in the same period last year.

In the European Union, trade balances were at a 4.2 billion euros deficit, down from a 28.2 billion euros surplus in the prior year. Trade within the EU improved by 13.8% to 306.3 billion euros in the same period.

In the January to October 2021 period, the EU posted a lower 87.5 billion euros surplus, down from a $162.2 billion euros surplus in the prior year.
