US Consumer Price Index Eases to an Expected 0.5% Increase in July

(Bureau of Labor Statistics) US Consumer Price Index rose by 0.5% in July, the same as expected, after a 0.9% uptick in June.

The food index rose by 0.7% in July, with the five major grocery food group indexes rising. Food away from home index surged by 0.8%

The energy index gained by 1.6% in July, led by the gasoline index which rose by 2.4%.

Less food and energy, the index for all items rose by 0.3% in July, after jumping by 0.9% in June.

All items index surged 5.4% over the past 12 months, the same as June.

Less food and energy, all items or core index rose by 4.3% in the past 12 months, less than June’s 4.5%, with energy index up 23.8%. 

The food index was up 3.4% over the past 12 months ending July, up from 2.4% in the 12 months ending June.

SPY is up +0.16%, DXY is down -0.15%.
