(Department of Labor) A total of 200,000 Americans filed for jobless claims in the week ending April 30, an increase of 19,000 from the prior week.
On a four-week average, the jobless claims increased by 8,000 to 188,000. The previous week’s jobless claims were revised up by 1,000 to 181,000.
The continuing claims were recorded at 1.384 million, an increase of 19,000 from the prior week. The claims were at the lowest since January 17, 1970.
The initial claims under the state programs stood at 196,962 last week, a decline of 3.5% or 7,164 from the prior week. The decline was lower compared to expectations of 25,765 or 12.6% lower claims.
The continuing claims under state programs edged lower by 2.7% or 38,872 to 1.404 million. The decline was a higher than expected fall of 1.4% or 19,646.
The claims rose the highest in New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Georgia, and New Jersey. The largest declines were noted in California, Ohi, Michigan, Washington, and Minnesota.
