NPF Job Numbers Soar 428,000 in April. Unemployment Steady at 3.6%

(Bureau of Labor Statistics) The nonfarm payroll employment rose by 428,000 in April, with widespread job additions across various sectors.

Job gains were noted the highest in leisure and hospitality, manufacturing, transportation, and warehousing. 

The job additions occurred despite the unemployment rate remaining unchanged at 3.6% in April, slightly higher than 3.5% in February 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. A total of 5.9 million persons remained unemployed, slightly higher than 5.7 million in February 2020.

The number of permanent job losers held steady at 1.4 million, while temporary layoffs also little changed at 853,000.

In April, the labor participation rate was 62.2%, almost unchanged from the prior month but 1.2% below February 2020.

The average hourly earnings improved by 10 cents or 0.3% to $31.85 in April. The earnings have risen by 5.5% over the past twelve months.
