(Department of Labor) US jobless claims rose by 4,000 to hit 353,000 in the week that ended August 21. The claims were higher than the expected 350,000.
On a four-week average, jobless claims declined by 11,500 to 366,500. The claims were the lowest since March 14, 2020.
Continuing claims was 2.862 million, down by 3,000 from the previous week. The previous week’s continuing claims were revised up by 45,000 to 2.865 million.
Claims under state programs totaled 297,765, down by 3.8% or 11,699 from the previous week. The decline was below the expected fall of 5.1% or 15,864.
The largest increases in jobless claims were recorded in Virginia, New Mexico, the District of Columbia, Georgia, and Nevada. The largest declines in initial claims were posted in Texas, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, and Massachusetts.
