Euro Area’s Annual Inflation Climbs to 5% in December, 5.3% in the EU

(Eurostat) Euro area’s annual inflation rose from 4.9% in November to a higher 5.0% in December, both above a minus rate of 0.3% in the prior year.

Annual Inflation Rates

In the EU, inflation was posted at a higher rate of 5.3% in December, more than 5.2% in November and above 0.3% in the prior year. 

In the euro area, inflation rose the highest in energy at 2.46 percentage points and services, which posted a gain of 1.02 percentage points. Non-energy industrial goods saw a 0.78 percentage points increase, while food, alcohol, and tobacco 0.71 percentage points. 

Inflation was registered the slowest in Malta, Portugal, and Finland. Inflation rose the highest in Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland.
