Consumer Sentiment Edges 3.6% Higher in September but Cautious Optimism Reigns

(University of Michigan) US Consumer Sentiment Index in late September was 72.8, a 3.6% increase from August. On a year-over-year basis, the consumer sentiment was still down 9.5%.

The Current Economic Conditions index surged to 80.1, a gain of 2.0% from August. The index was 8.8% below the prior year.

The Index of Consumer Expectations reached 68.1, an increase of 4.6% from August. The index remained 9.9% below the comparable month of 2020.

Consumers still expressed concerns of the Delta variant cases, uncertain long-term prospects, and an inflationary environment that has prompted a postponement in spending.
