Facebook Enters into First Deal with CleanMax to Purchase Renewable Energy in India

Facebook has agreed to buy renewable energy in India from a local firm’s wind power project, according to Reuters. The 32 megawatt wind power project is part of a larger portfolio of wind and solar projects that Facebook and Mumbai-based CleanMax are working together to add renewable power to India’s grid.

CleanMax will own and operate the projects, while Facebook will buy the power off the grid using environmental attribute certificates, or carbon credits.

About half of the project’s capacity has been commissioned and already generating power.

Facebook has similar partnerships in Singapore with energy providers Sunseap Group, Terrenus Energy, and Sembcorp Industries

The electricity generated from the plants is expected to power Facebook’s first Asian data center, which the company expects to start operations next year. Facebook stock is currently gaining. FB: NASDAQ is up 0.98% on premarket.
