Amazon.com announced on Wednesday that it is enhancing its cloud-based voice service, Alexa, with generative artificial intelligence technology to enable more human-like conversations. The company showcased these upgrades at the 2023 product event, unveiling new features for devices equipped with Alexa, including Echo devices.
Dave Limp, Senior Vice President of Devices and Services at Amazon, explained that while Alexa has always been a top personal AI, it has been limited in its conversational abilities. However, with the introduction of generative AI technology, users can now engage in near-human conversations with Alexa.
During the event, Limp demonstrated these capabilities on the updated Echo Show 8. The device, priced at $149.99, will be available for shipping next month. Limp had a live conversation with Alexa about football, and the device impressively remembered his favorite college team without being prompted. Additionally, Alexa provided recommendations for food options for a football party and even composed an invitation on the spot.
Current Echo device owners will also benefit from these conversational advancements. They will receive a free preview of the updated capabilities, including those who have owned Echo devices since the initial release back in 2014.
The future of AI has generated enthusiasm among investors, resulting in an increase in tech stocks this year. The Nasdaq Composite index has risen by 31% in 2023, with Amazon shares surging over 60% thus far. While Amazon has previously discussed the impact of AI on its Web Services business, these recent announcements are focused on enhancing everyday consumer interactions with the technology.
In addition to these upgrades, Amazon plans for Alexa’s voice to undergo changes early next year. The voice will sound less robotic and include emotional inflections such as laughter and surprise.
Despite these exciting developments, Amazon’s shares experienced a 0.3% decline on Wednesday, closing at $137.29.
