US Retail Sales Drop to a Worse than Feared 1.1% in July as Covid Bite

(Census Bureau) US retail and food services sales fell 1.1% to $617.7 billion in July from June, below the expected drop of 0.3% as Delta variant slowed activity and stimulus aid waned.

Retail and Food Services Sales from Previous Month

July’s retail and food services sales were 15.8% higher than the comparable month of 2020.

For the quarter May-July 2021, retail and food services sales were up 20.6% from a comparable period of last year.

July’s retail trade sales were 1.5% below June, but up 13.3% above the comparable month of last year. 

Clothing and clothing accessories store sales surged 43.4% from July 2020. Food services and drinking places gained 38.4% from last year.
