UK Retail Sales Jump 0.5% to Remain Elevated from the Pre-Pandemic Levels

(Office for National Statistics) Retail sales in the UK rose by 0.5% between May and June, and were up 9.5% compared to the pre-pandemic level in February 2020.

Euro 2020 football championship contributed to the surge in UK retail sales, with food store sales volumes up 4.2% in June from May.

Non-food stores recorded a 1.7% slip in sales volume in June, as household goods stores saw a decline in demand.

Increased travel saw automobile fuel sales surge by 2.3% in June, but they remain 2.1% below the February pre-pandemic level.

On a three-month basis, retail sales rose by 12.2% to June, from the previous three months

Although online retail sales were above the pre-pandemic levels, volume as a proportion of total retail sales fell by 26.7% in June compared to 28.4% in May.
