US Narrows International Trade Deficit by $3.2 Billion in July as Imports Fall

(BEA) The US posted an international trade deficit of $70.1 billion in July, a decline of $3.2 billion or 4.3% from June.

July’s exports rose by 1.3% from June to $212.8 billion against a 0.2% decline in imports, which reached $282.9 billion.

The goods trade deficit narrowed by $5.5 billion to a lower level of $87.7 billion in July. Services surplus reduced by $2.4 billion to $17.7 billion. 

On a three-month basis to July, the average trade deficit rose by $1.1 billion to $70.6 billion.

On a year over year basis, the quarterly trade deficit increased by $15.2 billion, compared to the similar three months to July 2020.

Year-to-date, the international trade deficit widened by 37.1% or $131.0 billion, compared to the same period of last year.
