(Department of Labor) The US reported a total of 185,000 jobless claims in the week that ended April 9, up by 18,000 from the previous week.
On a four-week moving average, the jobless claims were 172,250, up by 2,000 from the previous week.
The continuing claims were 1.475 million, down by 48,000 from the previous week. The claims were 1.512 million on a four-week moving average, a decline of 29,750 from the previous week.
The claims under various programs totaled 222,545, up by 14.5% or 28,151 from the previous week. The increase was higher than expectations, with a gain of 3.4% or 6,692.
The continuing claims under state programs were 1.57 million, down by 4.8% or 80,061 from the previous week. The claims were expected to decline by 1.8%, or 28,941.
The initial claims rose the highest in Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, and Florida. The largest declines were in Michigan, Texas, New Jersey, Kentucky, and New York.
