US Jobless Claims Now at the Lowest Since 1969 After Falling by 28,000

(Department of Labor) US jobless claims were recorded at 187,000 in the week that ended March 19, down by 28,000 from the previous week.

The claims were at the lowest level since September 6, 1969. The filings fell by 11,500 to 211,750 on a four-week moving average.

The continuing claims were 1.350 million, a decline of 67,000 from the previous week. The level marks the lowest since January 3, 1970.

The initial claims under various state programs fell by 11.2% or 22,824, to mark the week ending March 19 at 181,087. The decline defied expectations of a 2.5% or 5,080 increase.

The continuing claims under the state programs fell by 4.1% or 73,688 to 1.731 million. The decline was greater than expectations of a 0.4%, or 6,851, reduction.

The initial claims rose the highest in Michigan, Ohio, California, Missouri, and Illinois. The largest declines were in New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington, and the District of Columbia.
