US Job Openings Fall from July’s Record to 10.4M in August

(BLS) The US posted 10.4 million jobs opening on the last business day of August, down by 6.6% or 659,000 from July’s record high. The Northeast and Midwest regions saw a decline.

The most significant decline in job openings was recorded in health care and social assistance at 224,00.

Accommodation and food services saw a 178,000 fall in job openings, while state and local government education posted a 124,000 decline.

The federal government posted an increase in job openings at 22,000.

The number of hires in August declined by 439,000 to 6.3 million. The hire rate stood at 4.3%.

Job separations were little changed at 6.0 million in August from July. The separation rate was recorded at 4.1%.

In the 12 months that ended August 2021, a total of 72.6 million hires were recorded, while separations reached 66.7 million, leading to a net employment increase of 5.9 million.
