United Airlines has agreed with aerospace company Boom Supersonic to acquire a new high-speed aircraft fleet, according to the press release. The new aircraft will operate at 100% fuel efficiency and will reduce travel time by half.
United’s commercial deal is the first by an American airline with Boom Supersonic
The deal is a move by United to return supersonic speeds to air travel and strengthen the sustainability focus.
United is expected to acquire 15 of Overture’ airliners after safety, sustainability, and operating checks with an option for further purchases of 35 aircraft.
Overture will become the first net-zero large commercial aircraft once the deal is complete.
Overture will be rolled out in 2025 and fly in 2026 before starting to carry air travelers by 2029.
Boom and United will also collaborate in the manufacturing of more aircraft running on 100% sustainable aviation fuel.
