Russian Court Fines Meta 1.9 billion Rubles on Alleged Law Violations

(VC) Facebook’s parent Meta has been fined 1.990 billion rubles, more than 27 million USD, by the decision of Moscow’s Tagansky district court for violating the administrative law.

The news came out the same day, as Russia steps up to pressure another tech giant, Google, with $98 million for the same reason.

The fine is related to failure to delete from the social network information that is “prohibited” in Russia. At least two thousand “inappropriate materials” have remained on Facebook and Instagram.

Facebook had previously been fined 83 million rubles since the beginning of 2021, with the latest fine based on the company’s annual turnover.

Meta’s fine now attracts similar moves on other tech giants, with Apple on the radar for a ban on alternative payment methods on applications.
