(Marijuana Moment) US president Joe Biden is expecting to nominate Robert Califf as a new commissioner to the Food and Drug Administration.
Califf participated in a research summit on Cannabis in 2016 in which he recognized various therapeutic benefits of the plant. He also prescribed cannabinoids in cardiology practice.
Califf headed the FDA in a short period during Obama’s administration and said that the agency was interested in promoting Cannabis research and development.
The expected Biden nominee says additional studies are needed to establish whether botanical marijuana could be used for any indication. He says that for such products to be approved, they must satisfy the minimum statutory requirements.
The nomination of Califf is still facing hurdles as stakeholders raise concerns over his call to ban flavored vape products in 2019.
