(Twitter) Meta has started testing transactions on its messaging service WhatsApp through the Novi wallet.
Meta says it will allow the new feature for a limited number of users in the US, who will be able to send and receive money promptly at no cost.
The tech giant says using the Novi wallet does not compromise the privacy of WhatsApp users’ personal messages and calls.
Meta’s head of Novi Stephane Kasriel says the company has tested the new features and their functionalities since the wallet was introduced in mid-October.
The launch of WhatsApp payments happens amid the US rein on Meta Novi wallet, with the Department of Justice threatening to stop its use on the company platforms. The Open Markets Institute, a US nonprofit organization, questioned the Novi wallet, saying Meta was getting involved in an illegal business of financial transactions.
