(Bloomberg) Apple Inc. has agreed to allow media app developers to link their App Store to other websites and avoid the current 30% fees on downloads and subscriptions.
The change will be implemented next year only for reader apps. The 30% fees charged on downloads and in-app subscriptions still apply to gaming developers.
Companies like Netflix and Spotify had raised concerns that Apple did not allow them to link their app stores to their portal for their users to manage accounts from there. Apple’s move is expected to end the scrutiny.
Apple will allow the app developers to share a single link to their web portal with no other alternative payment systems and will also provide user protection on the external platforms.
A new bill was passed in South Korea on Tuesday to compel Apple and Google mobile platforms to allow users to choose online payment methods.
