Jobless Claims Mark Another Gain to Reach a Worse Than Expected 351,000 Figure

(Department of Labor) US Jobless claims rose by 16,000 to reach 351,000 in the week that ended September 18. The claims were higher than the projected 320,000.

The jobless claims reached 335,000 on a 4-week average, which is only 750 below the previous week. The previous week’s claims were revised higher by 750 to 336,500.

Continuous claims were 2.845 million, up 131,000 from the previous week. The claims were the lowest since March 21, 2020.

Total claims under state programs were 306,209, an increase of 15.2% or 40,307 from the previous week. The increase was a higher than expected gain of 9.2% or 24,527.

Initial claims rose the highest in Louisiana, District of Columbia, Arizona, Maryland, and Missouri. The states of Illinois, California, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia posted the largest declines in initial claims.
