Jobless Claims Make a U-turn to Fall to a Below-Estimate Level of 326,000

(Department of Labor) US jobless claims for the week that ended October 2 was 326,000, a decline of 38,000 from the previous week and below the projected 348,000.

US Initial Claims

On a 4-week average, jobless claims rose by 3,500 to 344,000.

Continuous claims were 2.714 million, a decline of 97,000 from the previous week. The claims were the lowest since March 14, 2020.

The initial claims under state programs declined by 13.8% or 41,431 to reach 258,909. The decrease was higher than the expected drop of 1.2% or 3,711.

The states of California, Michigan, Texas, District of Columbia, and Minnesota posted the largest increases in initial claims. Virginia, Maryland, Arizona, Louisiana, and Ohio had the largest declines in initial claims.
