(Bloomberg) US Food and Drug Administration has allowed Moderna Inc., Pfizer Inc., and BioNTech SE vaccines to be given as a third dose to Americans with weak immune systems.
The decision by the US regulator aims to protect the most vulnerable people, even if they are fully vaccinated following a continued surge in Delta variant infections.
FDA’s decision reflected a study in the New England Journal of Medicine that showed that the third dose of Moderna can increase Covid-fighting antibodies in patients.
The decision does not apply to other vaccinated Americans and happens after concerns were raised about patients going for extra doses in an unsupervised manner.
An advisory committee to the Centre for Disease and Control is set to meet on Friday to discuss booster doses of Covid-19 vaccine.
Up to 60% of eligible Americans from the age of 12 have been fully vaccinated from Covid-19.
