Facebook Blames Network Configuration Hitch on Monday’s Global Service Outage

(Bloomberg) Facebook experienced a global service outage on Monday in what the company said was due to a network configuration problem.

Facebook’s Instagram, WhatsApp, and messenger social network services went offline for hours in what is considered the longest technical setback in recent times.

The outage affected the company’s internal communications systems and tools forcing engineers to visit physical server locations and manually reset the servers.

The social media giant’s engineering team said that the outage had a cascading effect on communication between data centers.

Over 2.75 billion Facebook users sought alternatives during the outage. Twitter’s Signal messenger saw millions of new signups while Telegram topped the US iPhone chart.

Facebook’s stocks tumbled 4.9% to close at $326.23 on Monday before crawling back 1.5% by 4.30 am on pre-market. The company ruled out any data security breach during the outage.

FB: NASDAQ is up +0.82% on pre-market.
