Euro Area and EU Swing Into Trade Deficit in November as Imports Widen

(Eurostat) Euro area posted a trade deficit of 1.5 billion euros in November 2021, the first negative balance since January 2014 and a fall from a surplus of 25 billion euros in the prior year.

The trade deficit in November reflected a higher 32% annual increase in euro area imports, compared to a lower 14.4% surge in exports. Intra-euro area trade improved by a yearly 22.1% to 204.3 billion euros in November.

In the January to November period, the euro area still managed a surplus of 133.5 billion euros, a decline from 205.6 billion euros in the prior year. Intra-euro area trade grew by 19.9% in the period.

In the European Union, the trade deficit was posted at 8.3 billion euros in November, compared to 24.5 billion euros in the prior year. Intra-EU trade grew by a yearly 19.8% to 321.9 billion euros.

In November 2021, exports in the EU improved by a yearly 13.8%, compared to a higher 37.6% increase in imports.

During the January to November period, the EU posted a 78.8 billion euros trade surplus, down from a surplus of 186.5 billion euros in the prior year. Intra-EU trade grew by 19.3% during the period.
