Cannabis Compounds Found to Stop Covid-19 Virus, Oregon University Study

(NIH) Researchers affiliated with Oregon State University have found that compounds found in cannabis blocks the virus that causes Covid-19 from invading the cells.

The researchers say that two cannabinoid acids found in hemp cannabis can bind to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, preventing it from entering the cells.

Richard van Breemen, one of the researchers, says that the cannabinoids used in the study are common and readily available. The researchers say the cannabinoids are also safe for humans and do not belong to controlled substances such as THC.

The researchers also add that the hemp compounds are effective against variants such as the UK B.1.1.7 and South Africa’s B.1.351.

The research now sheds more light on new avenues to prevent Covid-19 and prevent infections. Van Breemen recommends that the cannabinoids can be developed into Covid-19 drugs but says further studies may be needed.
