China Imposes Covid-19 Lockdown in Xi’an City Ahead of Beijing Olympics

(Xinhua) China has placed the central city of Xi’an, which hosts about 13 million people, under lockdown to tame the rising cases of the coronavirus.

The move to impose restrictions occurs when Xi’an reported 63 vases of Covid-19, out of the total 73 new cases, with the Delta variant the main threat compared to the newly emerged Omicron.

In one of the toughest lockdowns since the coronavirus broke in Wuhan, China imposed stay-at-home orders, allowing only one person per household out for essentials each day.

The lockdown now threatens the Beijing Winter Olympics, which are expected next year.  Experts say the move to impose restrictions aims to reduce risks of the spread of the virus during the Winter Games.

China’s tough moves to contain the virus is seen as an attempt to promote its zero-Covid policy, with the Winter Olympic Games officials saying Covid cases could soar during the event.
