US robotics company Boston Dynamics on Monday unveiled a new robot called Stretch, according to Reuters. The robot is designed to do a single warehousing job of moving boxes.
Stretch will be the first robot for one task that Boston Dynamics has built, based on requests from companies across the world.
Stretch has a small mobile base that allows it to move around tight spaces in existing warehouses without having to reconfigure them for automation.
The robot is equipped with an arm and a smart-gripper with advanced sensing and computer vision cameras to identify and handle large boxed and shrink-wrapped cases.
The robot rolled out when there is an upswing in online shopping, leading to growth in the warehousing sector, with momentum expected to continue this year.
Boston Dynamics is yet to give pricing for Stretch, but they said the system can be installed without costly reconfiguration or investments in the new fixed infrastructure.
