Big Win for Recreational Cannabis in Mexico as Top Court Removes Prohibition

(BBC) Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled in favor of recreational use of cannabis by adults, terming the current prohibition unlawful.

The 8-3 court ruling means that adults in Mexico can apply for permits to use and cultivate cannabis.

Cannabis users with a permit will be allowed to carry up to 28g and cultivate up to eight plants at home.

The ruling does not include the commercialization of cannabis, even as some interest groups said it would not result in significant immediate changes.

The ruling comes following stalled legalizations in Congress and is expected to reduce violence related to dealings in illegal drugs.
