Apple could start mass production of the next generation of Mac processors this month, according to NIKKEI Asia. The production will be a leap towards the replacement of Intel-designed central processing units with Apple processors.
Known as M2, the new chipset could be shipped as early as July for use in MacBooks scheduled for sale in the second half of the year.
The so-called system-on-a-chip integrates central processing units, graphic processing units, and artificial intelligence accelerators in a single chip.
Apple’s new chipset is made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, using 5-nanometer plus technology.
The shift to own chipsets is a blow to Intel which has dominated the personal computer industry for decades with its X-86 chip architecture.
The move is expected to help further differentiate Apple’s products from those of rivals Apple stock is currently gaining. AAPL: NASDAQ is up 0.59% on premarket.
