(Yahoo! Finance) A US district court Judge has granted an injunction requested by Epic Games Inc. against Apple’s App Store seeking to allow alternative payments for consumers.
Federal judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ordered that Apple let developers of mobile apps move customers to other payment methods.
Gonzalez Rogers said that Apple engaged in monopolistic practice that disadvantages consumers from getting alternative cheaper prices. The judge did not find the App Store as a monopoly.
The court-ordered changes comes when Apple is facing pressure from global regulators to open its App Store to rivals
The court ruling ends a yearlong battle between the app developers and Apple, in what could be a blow to the iPhone giant’s dominance in the $100 billion market for mobile games.
Apple’s App Store generates more than $20 billion each year, with an estimated 75% profit margin from a 30% fee it charges on developers as commission. The judge did not order a reduction of the fee, but said Apple did not justify the rate.
