The US National Labor Relations Board will on Tuesday begin reviewing workers’ votes on whether to form a union at Amazon’s Alabama fulfillment center, according to Reuters. The votes from more than 5,800 workers are part of a prolonged process expected to last days and spark legal challenges.
The tallying of votes might not begin until later this week or next after Amazon and the union checks the eligibility of ballots cast.
Subsequent procedures and objections are expected to forestall the certified results.
Amazon has aggressively discouraged attempts to organize and says workers might sacrifice certain rights if the push succeeds.
A union victory is remarkable for the US labor movement, especially given the prevalence of laws that discourage workplace organizing in the southern states.
At the end of February, President Joe Biden defended workers’ rights to form unions free from intimidation.
Senator Sanders questioned why so much money had been spent to discourage union organizing for better pay, conditions, and benefits.
