Airbnb Posts a More than Expected 299% Jump in Revenue in the Second Quarter

(Airbnb) Airbnb’s revenue in the second quarter was $1.34 billion, up 299% year over year and more than expected $1.26 billion. 

The revenue was boosted by a 29% surge in bookings from the first quarter, with 83.1 million nights and experiences booked. The bookings were up 197% year over year.

Gross booking value totaled $13.4 billion, up 320% year over year, remaining above the projected $11.56 billion.

The average daily rate jumped 41% year over year to $161 in the second quarter, up from $160 in the first quarter.

The company reported a loss of $68 million in the second quarter, down from a loss of $576.6 million in the comparable quarter of 2020.

Airbnb expects to book the strongest quarterly revenue in the third quarter, although it projects nights and experiences to fall below those of Q2 and Q3 of 2019.
