US Retail Sales Climb 1.7% in October Amid Price Pressures

(Census Bureau) US retail and food services sales totaled $638.2 billion in October, up 1.7% from the previous month as price pressures raised consumer spending.

The October retail sales beat an estimated jump of 1.5% and gained more than 0.8% posted in September.

On a year over year basis, the retail sales were up by 16.3%. The retail sales rose 15.4% from prior year during the August to October 2021 period.

Gasoline sales rose by 3.9% from September and were up 46.8% from last year. Food and drinking places sales remained unchanged from September but increased by 29.3% from the prior year. 

Clothing store sales declined by 0.7% but remained 25.8% above last year.
