US Jobless Claims Makes an Advance of 23,000 in the First Week of the Year

(Department of Labor) US jobless claims for the week that ended January 8 totaled 230,000, up 23,000 from the previous week.

On a four-week moving average, jobless claims rose by 6,250 to 210,750.  

The continuing claims fell by 194,000 to 1.559 million. The claims were the lowest since June 2, 1973 when the claims hit 1.556 million. 

The claims under various state programs increased by 32.8% or 103,693 to 419,446. The increase was a higher than the expected jump of 25.7% or 81,072.

The continuing claims under the state programs grew by 10.0% or 187,075 to 2.0568 million. The increase was less than the expected gain of 20.4% or 381,506.

Initial claims rose the highest in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Washington, and Michigan. The largest declines were in Missouri, Tennessee, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, and New Mexico.
