US Jobless Claims Fall by 71,000 to Mark the Lowest Level Since 1969

(Department of Labor) US jobless claims in the week that ended November 20 was 199,000, down by 71,000 from the previous week and the lowest since November 15, 1969.

US Initial Claims

The previous week’s jobless claims were revised up by 2,000 to 270,000. On a four-week moving average, jobless claims fell by 21,000 to 252,250.

Continuing claims were 2.049 million, a decline of 60,000 from the previous week. The continuing claims were 2.117 million on a four-week average, down by 47,500 from the previous week.

Initial claims under state programs totaled 258,622, an increase of 7.6% or 18,187 from the previous week. The increase was lower than the expected jump of 36.8% or 88,572.

Initial claims rose the highest in the states of California, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The largest declines in initial claims were in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois.
