(Department of Labor) The US posted a total of 260,000 jobless claims in the week that ended January 22, a decline of 30,000 from the previous week. The claims were below estimated 260,000.

The jobless claims still rose on an average basis over the past four weeks, with gains of 15,000 to 247,000.
Continuing claims increased by 51,000 to 1.675 million. On a four-week moving average, the continuing claims fell by 10,750 to 1.652 million.
The initial claims under various state programs fell by 21.5% or 73,357 to 267,573. The decline was higher than the expected decline of 12.7% or 43,282.
The continuing claims under the state programs fell by 2.9% or 60,303 to 2.005 million. The decline was lower than the expected drop of 5.4% or 111,254.
Initial claims increased the most in California, Kentucky, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, and Virginia. The largest declines were noted in New York, Missouri, Washington, Michigan, and Texas.
