US Jobless Claims Advance by 23,000 to an Above-Estimate Level

(Department of Labor) US jobless claims rose by 23,000 in the week that ended February 12 to 248,000. The claims were above estimates of 219,000.

On a four-week moving average, jobless claims fell by 10,500 to 243,250.

The continuing claims declined by 26,000 to 1.593 million. The claims were down by 7,750 to 1.63 million on a four-week moving average.

The initial claims under various state programs increased by 7,742 or 3.4% to 238,482. The increase was contrary to the expected decline of 14,676 or 6.4%.

The continuing claims under state programs fell 1.2% or 24,033 to 1.975 million. The claims were expected to increase by 0.1% or 1,997 from the previous week.

Initial claims rose the highest in Michigan, New Jersey, Kansas, Delaware, and Maryland. The largest declines were recorded in California, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, and Indiana.
