(Bureau of Labor Statistics) The US posted 10.9 million job openings on the last business day of December, unchanged at 6.8%.
The largest gains in job openings were in accommodation and food services which added 133,000 new positions, followed by information at 40,000. Job openings fell the highest in finance and insurance at -89,000, while wholesale trade job openings were down by 48,000.
Hires fell to 6.9 million, while the total separations also posted declines to 6.3 million. Quits rate was unchanged at 2.9%, while layoffs and discharges held at the series low of 0.8%.
Total hires hit 75.3 million over the year that ended in December 2021, while separations reached 68.9 million. Overall net employment gains were posted at 6.4 million.
