US Factory Orders Accelerate With a 2.2% Jump in March

(Census Bureau) The total new orders for manufactured goods in the US were $557.3 billion in March, an increase of 2.2% or $11.8 billion.

The increase in factory orders in March is an acceleration from a jump of only 0.1% in February. 

In the durable goods category, new orders hit $275 billion, up by 1.1% or $3.0 billion. The increase was lower than a gain of 1.7% in March.

The shipments for the factory orders were reported to have increased by 2.3% or $12.6 billion to $556.4 billion, higher than a gain of 1.1% in February.

Unfilled orders rose again after fourteen straight months of increases, adding 0.4% or $5.5 billion to $2,294.8 billion. The increase was slightly lower than 0.5% in February. 

The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio for the factory orders was recorded at 6.72, compared to 6.74 in February. 

In the inventories category, stockpiles increased by 1.3% or $10.4 billion to $797.6 billion.  The gain was higher than February’s 0.9% jump. The inventories-to-shipments ratio fell to 1.43 from February’s 1.45.
