UK Unemployment Rate Falls by 0.5% In the Third Quarter

(ONS) UK unemployment was 4.3% in the July to September quarter, a decline of 0.5% from the previous quarter. The unemployment is now 0.3% above the pre-pandemic levels.

July to September 2021 estimates show a quarterly increase in the employment rate, while the economic inactivity rate was mostly unchanged on the quarter.

The employment rate ticked higher by 0.4% from the previous quarter to 75.4%, to remain 1.1% below the pre-pandemic level. 

The level of economic inactivity in the UK was at 21.1%, unchanged from last quarter but 0.9% higher than the pre-pandemic level.

Weekly hours worked ticked higher by 25.2 million in the third quarter from the previous to 1.03 billion hours.

Overall, the UK added 160,000 employees in the third quarter, pushing total payrolls to 29.3 million and reinforcing the Bank of England’s move to raise interest rates.
