UK Retail Sales Makes a Comeback, Jumps by 1.9% In January

(ONS) Retail sales volumes in the UK were up 1.9% in January 2022, erasing some losses after a 4.0% decline in December.

Sales at non-food stores improved by 3.4% in January to a level that is 1.1% below February 2020.

Automotive fuels sales were up 4.1%, after an initial decline of 5.0% in December. The sales are now 3.3% below the pre-pandemic level. 

Sales volumes at food stores were 0.8% below February 2020 level after falling in January. 

Online sales fell, with the proportion relative to retail sales at 25.3% in January, the lowest since March 2020. 

Overall, UK retail sales were now 3.6% above the pre-pandemic levels in February 2020.

FTSE 100 is up +0.24%, GBPUSD is up +0.01%.
