UK Private Sector Loses Momentum as Output Index Plunges to a 7-Month Low

(IHS Markit) UK Composite Output Index was 54.1 in September, a seven-month low, and the softest rate of growth in March. The growth index marked a fourth-consecutive monthly decline and was below August’s 54.8.

Services Business Activity Index was 54.6, a seven-month low from August’s 55.0.

Manufacturing Output Index was 51.8, a seven-month low from August’s 54.1. Manufacturing PMI was 56.3, a seven-month low and below 60.3 in August.

Job creation was still robust, with strong hiring by service sector businesses. New orders grew at a weak rate, with backlogs of work continuing to rise.

Inflationary pressures remained elevated, with input costs sharp and charges jumping to the highest on record.

Business confidence over the next 12 months hit an 8-month low, but remained above the series average.
