UK Consumer Prices are Now at a Record in 30 Years After a 5.4% Jump in Dec.

(ONS) Inflation in the United Kingdom rose 5.4% in the 12 months that ended December 2021, the highest on record since March 1992.

At 5.4%, the annual inflation is higher than 5.1% posted in November and a more than expected increase of 5.2%.

Including owner occupiers’ housing costs, inflation rose by 4.8% in the 12 months to December, higher than a gain of 4.6% in November.

On a monthly basis, CPIH rose by 0.5% in December, up from an increase of 0.2% in the prior year. The CPI rose by a similar percentage in December, compared to a gain of 0.3% in the prior year.

Housing and household services and transport contributed the highest to the annual CPIH gain, with an increase of 1.31% and 1.29%, respectively. Food and alcoholic beverages, furniture and household goods, restaurants and hotels, and clothing and footwear led the monthly increases in the CPIH.
