The Texas Department of Transportation has completed a study of the U.S. 287 corridor from Port Arthur to Future I-27 in Amarillo, a span of 671 miles.
This corridor serves as a major connection route for freight traffic and intermodal travel and passes through both rural and urban areas throughout the state connecting small towns and major metropolitian areas. The section of U.S. 287 that overlaps with Future I-27 is not included in this feasibility study.
This study has been in the works for more than a year as it encompasses 55 counties, 68 cities, four military installations, five public seaports, 8 million people in population or 28% of the state and $510 billion gross domestic product.
