Trump pushes Thune to cancel August recess to get remaining nominees confirmed

Trump made the plea in a Truth Social post on Saturday evening, stressing that the nominees are needed “badly.”

“Hopefully the very talented John Thune, fresh off our many victories over the past two weeks and, indeed, 6 months, will cancel August recess (and long weekends!), in order to get my incredible nominees confirmed. We need them badly!!!” the president posted.

According to the Senate schedule for this year, the August recess was set to begin on Aug 4. and last up until Labor Day, or Sept. 1. Other recesses are scheduled throughout the rest of 2025 as well, mostly for holidays, but one recess scheduled for late September and another in early October do not include holidays.

SENATE CONFIRMS TRUMP’S FIRST JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT OF SECOND TERM

Trump’s call to scrap the August recess in particular follows a whirlwind period in both chambers of Congress over the past two months. This included the lengthy debate and eventual passage of the president’s “big, beautiful bill,” as well as a recission bill that included $9 billion in DOGE-inspired cuts and a series of cryptocurrency bills.

Despite the hectic schedule, the Senate also needs to confirm various nominations of Trump’s, particularly his judicial ones, which have come at a slower pace than his first term. The upper chamber confirmed Trump’s first judicial nomination this past Monday, but many vacancies remain.
