The Federal Aviation Administration has issued new rules that require Remote Identification of drones, according to press release. The rules mandate operators of small drones to satisfy certain conditions before flying them over people and at night.
The Remote ID rule applies to operators of drones needing FAA registration
- Operate drones that send identification and location data and control station.
- Operate a drone with a Remote ID broadcast module for sending identification, location, and take-off information.
- Operate a drone without Remote ID at designated FAA identification areas.
Flying a drone over people and at night rule
- Operators will need remote pilot certificate for identification when operating the drones.
- The rule expands the class of authorities who can request identification forms from a remote pilot.
- The rule replaces the need to complete a recurrent test every 24 months and training for operating at night in certain areas.
Both rules are effective 60 days after publication in the Federal Register. Under Remote ID rule, manufacturers have 18 months to produce drones with Remote ID, while operators will need to start using drones with Remote ID within one year.
