The U.S. government announced this Friday sanctions against former Argentine President Cristina Fernández (2007-2015) and former Federal Planning Minister Julio de Vido for their alleged, but unproven, “involvement in significant acts of corruption during their public terms.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was the one to provide the information, stating in a statement that the measure taken by the Donald Trump administration makes both of them and their immediate family members ineligible to enter the United States.
In response to the attack, the former Argentine president reacted with her usual sarcasm, referring to real acts of corruption, such as those committed by current Argentine President Javier Milei with the crypto scam or those of US President Donald Trump with his notorious acts of bribery.
“Is it a crypto scam? Because, honestly, I didn’t commit any crypto scam in the United States or anywhere else. And my daughter even less so,” he said, referring to Milei’s scam involving the $LIBRA cryptocurrency.
He added: “Did my son sexually abuse a journalist or writer in the most expensive store in New York? Or did he bribe an American prostitute to keep it secret that he had hired her because it would hurt his campaign? Neither… Neither,” he said, referring to the famous, proven accusations of crimes committed by Donald Trump.
The political leader insinuated that the sanction is a settling of scores for having defeated Mauricio Macri in 2019 despite US funding, and asked: “Are they going to give the crypto-scam President another $20 billion? Remember, he’s not going to be reelected either.”
The former president addressed Milei and made it clear that the US sanction was a request from her White House colleague, but that it didn’t affect her at all. “You couldn’t contain yourself and immediately posted, leaving everyone’s finger pointing out that it was your request,” she said.
Finally, she called for a large march on March 24, the National Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice, the date the last military government was established. Cristina Fernández joked on her X account that “Videla and Massera were never prohibited from entering the US.”
