(Spotify) Spotify Technology SA has come out to defend its stand about Covid-19 by publishing rules on content allowed on its platform.
Spotify says the advisory seeks to raise awareness on what is allowed on the company’s service while also instilling accountability for creators.
The company says it will tag an advisory to every podcast episode that will direct listeners to a hub offering information about the pandemic.
Spotify says it created rules on the allowable content on the platform several years ago and a Covid-19 information advisory early in the pandemic, although it was yet to make them public. The company expects to redefine the rules further.
The latest move happens after musicians questioned the company’s stand on controversial podcast host Joe Rogan. Musicians Neil Young and Joni Mitchell pulled their music from the service, citing misinformation.
In the latest effort, Spotify did not mention Rogan directly. It remains to be seen whether the move will quell user backlash which is now seen threatening the streaming service.
Podcasts on Spotify grew to over 3 million in the last few years. The stock is still down by 48% in the last year.
SPOT: NYSE is currently up +9.90%.
