Sony Announces $3.6 Bln Deal for Game Developer Bungie in Catch up With Microsoft

(Sony) Sony Interactive Entertainment will acquire US game developer Bungie in the latest deal seen as a response to Microsoft’s blockbuster offer for Activision Blizzard.

The acquisition of Bungie, the creator of Destiny and Halo franchise, is expected to catapult Sony into the metaverse.

Bungie will continue to exist as a separate studio, and its games will not be confined to PlayStation. The company says its biggest change would be an acceleration in talent acquisition to support its vision.

The deal happened days after Microsoft announced a blockbuster $75 billion deal for Activision Blizzard.

Sony’s deal for Bungie is now expected to heighten rivalry with Microsoft as both companies seek dominance in the sector. An independent analyst Pelham Smithers says the acquisition could give Sony leverage against Microsoft.
